Test Nikon Z7. Came to accelerate the evolution...

Mirrorless cameras are here to stay, take over the world and change it. To deny that the focus of users - professionals and amateurs - as well as the market has shifted towards mirrorless, is simply silly. And it is strange that the heavyweights of the industry were the latest to introduce their mirrorless full-frame cameras. At the end of 2018, Nikon, under the loud slogan Mirrorlessre invention, released its first full-frame mirrorless cameras.

We waited! Finally, the owners of the Fujifilm X system received a full-fledged macro lens and have been quite happy about this for half a year, because before they managed only with a “half-breed”: the Fujinon XF 1: 260 mm f / 2.4 R Macro macro lens, released back in 2012. Why "half-breed"? It's very simple: the zoom ratio of this macro lens is only 1:2 (one to two!), which looked rather strange for Fuji's top series of mirrorless cameras.

Nikon D850 SLR camera test: decides everything? Start loving her right now...

It is pointless to argue that at one time the Nikon D800 was not just an outstanding camera, but a breakthrough on the scale of the entire photographic equipment market. It would seem that everyone has already forgotten about the race of megapixels, and here is a gigantic resolution packed into a 35-millimeter sensor. Landscape painters began to massively switch to eight hundred, studio photographers too. The D800E released in parallel caused some confusion. Which camera works better, why do we need a moiré filter, if without it it’s only better, how adequate is the difference in quality to the difference in price.

Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro lens review

The Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro doesn't have many reviews yet and quite a few tests, so I decided to correct the situation, especially since macro lenses are my element and I use them all the time. The new Fujinon XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro essentially opens up a whole new direction for macro photography in the FUJIFILM X-mount range. it is the first macro lens in this format with a 1:1 zoom and the most convenient focal length for most situations. Prior to this, the X-mount system had the XF 60mm f/2.4 macro, which gave a scale of only 1:2. Anything can be considered "macro", but in fact 1: 1 is optimal for any more or less demanding macro photographers. On a smaller scale it is difficult to shoot something unusual. And there was a ZEISS Touit 50 / 2.8 at a scale of 1: 1, but not very convenient in the field macro due to the fact that it reached a 1: 1 scale at 0.15 m focusing distance.

Portrait is a very popular genre in photography. And, perhaps, there are no photographers who have not taken portraits at least once in their lives. This is also a difficult genre, it has a lot of nuances, depending on the type of portrait. For example, it is difficult to compare business and children's portraits. All species basically have one similarity - people in the frame. But the background, clothing, choice of models and work with them also depend on the type. And when it comes to psychology, it's time to write a whole encyclopedia on shooting.

To the right of the viewfinder is a button for quickly changing the main settings and a reprogrammable AF / AE Lock key. A little more to the right is a ledge with a rubberized thumb pad, as well as a scroller responsible for setting shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation. To the right of the display is a navigation button, as well as a view mode button, a separate display settings key, and one programmable delete/cancel button.

Functionality

As already mentioned, Panasonic Lumix G5 received an updated Live MOS sensor with a resolution of 16 megapixels. The manufacturer himself calls it "digital", since part of the signal processing functions is assigned directly to the sensor. In theory, this should improve noise performance, which means shooting at higher ISOs. Well, compared to the Lumix G3, the sensitivity range has expanded by one step and is now ISO 160 - 12800.

Autofocus is performed using the usual contrast method, while competitors from Sony and Canon use a hybrid focusing method. The Panasonic Lumix G5 features multi-zone, spot, tracking and 1-zone autofocus. There are 23 focus points in total. The focusing speed depends on both the lighting conditions and the specific lens. Setting the focus point is done with one touch using the touch screen. Also available is the Quick AF function, which is triggered when the focus point is on the target. A dedicated AF/AE Lock key is responsible for autofocus lock. In this regard, the camera does not differ from its predecessor, showing approximately the same speed of the focusing system. Exposure metering is carried out by the usual methods: single-zone, multi-zone and center-weighted.

One of the significant innovations was a fully electronic shutter. It does not write off the traditional mechanical, but rather complements it, allowing silent shooting. The disadvantage of such a shutter is the inability to use the flash - it is synchronized only with a mechanical shutter. To activate silent shooting, use the special Silent Shutter function.

It takes about a second to turn on the camera. During this time, the device is completely ready for shooting. In combination with a fast memory card, excellent speed performance can be achieved, for example, the time to save a frame is only half a second. In the meantime, the recording is in progress, the device is ready to shoot the next frame. Recording a RAW file takes about 5 seconds also without blocking the camera.

The Lumix G5's burst rate surpassed the previous model by 2 frames per second, now it is 6 frames per second, both in full resolution and even in RAW format. This is even better than budget or mid-range DSLRs. When using Servo AF, the frequency drops to a maximum of 3.7 frames per second. In addition, there is the ability to record 20 frames per second, but the resolution of the images drops to 4 megapixels.

Added a camera and in terms of video capabilities. Full HD video is recorded at 60 fps with progressive scan, while Lumix G3 allowed to get such a frequency only with the use of interlaced scan. The length of the video is limited to 30 minutes, and the video stream can be compressed using either the AVCHD codec or MPEG-4. Audio is recorded using the built-in stereo microphone, but an optional external microphone can also be used if required.

Panasonic Lumix G5 has a set of manual shooting modes and allows you to adjust the shutter speed from 1/4000 s to 60 s. In addition, Lumix G5 offers 14 creative modes for every taste, including 3D shooting. Unfortunately, there are no panoramic and time-lapse photography, but there is a decent set of tools for in-camera photo and video processing. The picture can be cropped, rotated, reduced or changed the aspect ratio. For videos, splitting files into parts using the camera is available, which is extremely convenient.

Lithium-ion battery at full charge allows you to shoot about 320 shots. This is 50-70 frames more than the Lumix G3. However, the CIPA method, which is usually used to measure battery life, involves the active use of the built-in flash. If you shoot without it (which is not at all difficult due to the presence of a large number of fast lenses for Micro Four Thirds), then you can get a result of 500 frames. It's already decent.

Screen, viewfinder

When you first turn it on, a clear picture on the camera display catches your eye. Those who have seen the Lumix G3 work will definitely like the twofold difference in display resolution. The color rendition of the screen is correct, the brightness and contrast are quite sufficient for comfortable use. The design is still rotary, this has already been mentioned. To protect against accidental scratches and damage, the display can be turned to face the camera body. A feature of the touch display is the Touchpad AF function, which allows you to move the focus point with your finger while looking into the viewfinder.

Problem solved

Advantages: : - Capabilities of a DSLR in a light and compact body; - Suitable for both novice photographers (iA mode), and advanced amateurs (iA + mode), and pros - a wide range of manual settings; - ISO 100 - 12800. Moreover, thanks to the combination of an excellent matrix and built-in image processing software, even at iso 3200 noise is noticeable only at 100% magnification to the original, and at a normal scale it is almost invisible even at 6400; - Video 1920x1080 at 60 fps. The quality cannot be described in words, but if you look at the meter plasma, the image is simply mesmerizing. The sound, by the way, is recorded in stereo and is of very good quality; - Great scene modes - 23 of them, with a preset set of characteristics for each mode. Only night ones - 4, plus a night portrait. The "smooth skin" mode allows you to make very good daytime portraits "automatically" (there are five portrait modes in total !!). There are 14 more effects in addition to the scene modes, which makes the G5 attractive to completely new photographers, and allows beginners to create very high-quality and interesting pictures; - Electronic shutter; - High-resolution 3" tilt-and-turn screen, touch; - Wide focus mode. Spot focusing by pressing the touch screen. Super-fast focusing: estimated by Dpreview.com - about 0.1 s; - Tracking autofocus when shooting video!!! - Burst shooting 6 - 20 fps!!! - HDR mode - excellent detail in the shadows and no overexposure - Electronic level - now the beginner will never fill up the horizon! TVs, reporters and portraits, widths, fixes - anything Disadvantages: - Price so far - Lack of body version on sale. G5 is a very advanced device, and is unconditionally competitive with entry-level DSLRs, and even becomes equal to some mid-range DSLRs (the price of which is 40 or more K). Everything is in the reviews and descriptions of the devices ata. I will say that what captivated me the most is the amazing iA+ (Auto Intelligent Extended) mode. Panasonic G5 in this mode determines the scene very well and sets the picture parameters on its own. But right there, either on a high-contrast touch screen, or with a couple of clicks of the control wheel, you can set your own parameters: frame brightness (exposure), depth of field (aperture) and color temperature (WB). At the same time, overexposed areas on the screen flash with black zones, which allows for very precise exposure adjustment. All this is done in a few seconds and a couple of clicks - and your frame-masterpiece is ready! And finally - about the lenses. As a staffer, I definitely recommend the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 OIS Aspherical (H-HS12035). As a telephoto - Panasonic 35-100mm f / 2.8 LumixG X O.I.S. These two glasses will cover 98% of your needs, as the Panasonic 35-100 works great as a telephoto, macro, and portrait lens, while the Panasonic 12-35mm is an unsurpassed reporter and an excellent video lens.

Panasonic LUMIX G5 is a continuation of the glorious G-series. The devices of this series are, in my opinion, one of the best embodiments of the very idea of mirrorless cameras. Many manufacturers strive to make mirrorless cameras as compact as possible; this really doesn’t work, since objective limitations on minimization are imposed, excuse the pun, by the dimensions of the lenses (unless, of course, these are ultra-flat “pancake” fixes). As a result, mirrorless cameras lose their ergonomic grip, acquire crumpled controls and become uncomfortable to use, and at the same time remain without the much-desired miniaturization.

In this sense, the Panasonic G5 is the most optimal mirrorless camera. It has retained a comfortable grip (I repeat - comfortable! look at how ergonomically shaped it is) and large enough to still be a camera that is pleasant to hold in your hands. It just looks like a very small SLR camera.

The monitor is not just rotary. It is touch-sensitive, like other LUMIX G models. Panasonic is going the right way in implementing the touch interface - not all control functions are transferred to the monitor, but only some. If you do not like this type of control, you can use only the usual, "iron" buttons and levers. However, the touch monitor also allows you to perform specific functions - by touching the screen you set the autofocus point, or you can turn on the mode in which the picture will also be taken in this case.

However, this is not the first time we have seen all this, but what is unique in the G5 is the ability to use a touch monitor, while looking into the viewfinder, where the results of your manipulations will be visible. The viewfinder of the G5 is electronic, of course, and of very good quality, with an autoswitch sensor.

The device is available in three color schemes - black, white and silver.

Another innovation in the G5 interface– this is a joystick lever that is located under the index finger, between the shutter button and the movie button. It sticks up vertically and elastically springs left and right.

This joystick is programmable, however, there were very few available functions - zoom control (for those lenses that support this function), exposure compensation, or AUTO. The joystick can also be used for menu navigation.

The joystick allows you to enter the exposure shift easily and quickly. Even too easy you can easily touch it with your index finger and not notice that the pictures are now taken with a correction of + 1 / 3EV. I've never been able to do this trick.

When you enter exposure compensation (and other manipulations with the exposure pair), scales appear on the screen that clearly show the set values. By the way, here you see a two-coordinate electronic level, which helps to keep the camera strictly horizontal during shooting.

This is how the menu for switching the basic camera modes looks like. By the way, you can set the background image for this menu yourself - I do not remember that in any cell there was such an opportunity.

The shooting menu (here called "recording menu") contains six pages.

As befits an amateur-level camera, the Panasonix LUMIX G5 has a large number (more than twenty) of scene programs. For them, there is a separate SCN position on the mode dial.

The plots are called not so trite as usual (Landscape, Portrait, and so on). In some cases, it is not even entirely clear what was meant. Ease?.. hmm.

In total, there are five such programmable buttons on the rear panel. More precisely, there are three real iron buttons, and two more virtual buttons, you can interact with them through the touch interface.

By selecting "Fn Button Customization" from the menu, you first choose which of the five buttons you want to program...

And then assign the desired function to it. The list is quite extensive, thirty items:

A hallmark of Panasonic cameras is the Q.MENU on-screen menu, which provides quick access to the most frequently switched parameters. For LUMIC G5 it looks like this:

In fact, Q.MENU is superimposed on top of the image, meaning you can change settings without losing sight of the scene you're shooting. I purposely took these screenshots on a black background for better readability.

It's great that Panasonic G5's Q.MENU is programmable, you can redefine the functions included in it. We have been asking developers about this since the first appearance of Q.MENU in Panasonic cameras, and now, finally, we have waited. True, I did not have time to try how it works. Of course, we will tell you about it if the LUMIX G5 gets to us for more detailed testing.

Equipment

In the camera box you will find the Lumix G 14-12mm f/3.5-5.6 telescopic lens, lens hood, battery and charger, USB cable, shoulder strap, and quick guide user and software.

Design

The novelty will definitely appeal to enthusiastic photographers, because in terms of its shape and design, as well as dimensions, the Lumix DMC-G5 is closer to SLR cameras. The case is made of plastic and magnesium alloy with rubberized inserts.

The camera weighs only 562 g with battery and lens. On the front panel of the camera there is a bayonet mount, a lens lock button and an autofocus illuminator.

On the left side, apart from the eyelet for the neck strap, there are no functional elements, on the right side, connectors are hidden behind a plastic plug.

The top panel houses the speaker grille, built-in flash raise key, stereo microphone, hot shoe, mode selector with power button, as well as the shutter, video recording and smart mode activation keys.

On the back side there is a large swivel display, a viewfinder with a proximity sensor, and a set of function keys that are scattered around the screen.

Well, there is a tripod socket on the bottom panel, and the battery and memory card compartment is hidden behind the cover.

The camera is available in black, silver and white colors.

Ergonomics

The mirrorless camera is not as compact as most competitor solutions. The camera is even slightly larger than the previous model due to a more comfortable and, accordingly, larger handle.

On the back side there is a rubberized pad and a small protrusion near it. So the camera is easy to hold with one hand while shooting.

In general, the device turned out to be ergonomic. All the main keys and controls are under the fingers, you do not need to look for them.

To open the display, special grooves are provided at the top and bottom. Lid opens 180˚, display rotates 270˚. This will come in handy when shooting objects from above or below.

The proximity sensor works quickly and correctly, so once again you do not have to switch to the viewfinder manually.

Menu and controls

To enter the menu, only the central button of the five-way switch is used, while the settings can be changed both using the buttons and using the touch screen.

The menu is simple and colorful. It consists of five main items: photo and video settings, user and basic camera settings, and playback mode.

If you do not need to work with the menu, then the hardware navigation buttons will turn into quick settings buttons. They will help you change the autofocus mode, set the desired white balance and ISO values, and also enable continuous shooting.

Above the cross are buttons for entering the viewing menu and changing the information displayed on the display. In addition, above the screen is a shortcut key to the quick menu, which can be customized to your liking.

On the top edge there is a mode selector, a video recording button and a key for turning on the intelligent mode. There is a dedicated lever above the shutter button that can be used to control the electronic zoom (only with G Vario X lenses). In our case, it works as an auxiliary settings selector.

On the right side of the display there is an auxiliary panel that is responsible for additional settings and applying color filters depending on the selected mode.

There is also the ability to control the focus and metering point by touching the screen.

Functionality

Lumix DMC-G5K received a Live MOS matrix of 17.3 x 13 mm and a resolution of 16 megapixels. The sensor received improved processing algorithms. It is assisted by the new Venus Engine 7 FHD processor, thanks to which the speed of the camera is increased compared to the previous model.

The mirrorless camera is ready to go immediately after switching on, it is very fast in terms of filtering and photo processing, but RAW is not recorded instantly.

The speed of contrast autofocus is impressive. But its accuracy is not the best, so sometimes you have to help it with manual or spot focusing.

The burst shooting speed is 6 frames per second. This applies to maximum resolution and shooting in RAW format. In tracking autofocus mode, this figure will decrease to 3.7 frames per second.

The camera is equipped with a G VARIO 14-42 mm F3.5-5.6 lens, which has good sharpness and pleasant artistic blur. He received an optical stabilizer MEGA O.I.S. In addition, its luminosity is enough even for night shooting in the town. So you don't have to use the built-in flash.

The camera boasts 8 shooting modes: classic M/S/A/P, two custom C1 and C2, and two creative modes. The latter allow you to apply one of 14 filters to the picture or choose one of the 23 proposed scenes. I would like to note the scene modes, which provide a wide range of scenarios. Of these, it is worth noting the monochrome and warm night landscape.

An intelligent car is approaching the ideal here. The camera almost always accurately determines the white balance and measures the exposure. This option is quite suitable for amateurs, because after turning on the iA button, you do not have to go into the settings menu.

The detail of the pictures is very good. The camera can compete with entry-level DSLRs and more expensive mirrorless cameras with larger sensors. Color rendition is also as natural as possible.

The ISO sensitivity range varies from 160 to 12800. Values up to ISO 3200 can be considered working, but even at higher values, noise is not as noticeable as in the DMC-G3.

Photo examples:

The Lumix DMC-G5 can shoot Full HD video at 50 and 60 frames per second. You can select AVCHD or MP4 as formats. Video is recorded with tracking autofocus. In addition, color and contrast adjustments are available, as well as most stage effects. The video quality is very good.

Video examples:

The 3-inch touch screen has a resolution of 920,000 dots, which is almost twice as high as the previous model.

The built-in electronic viewfinder received 100% field coverage and a resolution of 1,440,000 dots.

To connect to a computer or monitor / TV, the camera received USB 2.0 / AV Out and miniHDMI. A 2.5mm Jack can be used to connect a remote control.

Working hours

The 1200 mAh lithium-ion battery is enough for more than 300 shots.

Impression

Balanced in terms of design, lightweight, ergonomic and extremely easy to use mirrorless. Lumix DMC-G5K is a versatile camera that excels in speed and focusing, a large number of artistic effects and modes, as well as the quality and detail of photo and video. The camera can compete with entry-level and mid-range DSLRs and all mirrorless cameras without exception.
